Why not have an 18- bard speedball?

That would be quite poetic.

I think the idea behind the speedball is that it's for people who want to get a quick game in, and an hour seemed like a reasonable amount of time. Playing less than 12 boards didn't seem reasonable (maybe ACBL wasn't even willing to award Masterpoints for less), so the result was a little less than 5 minutes per board.

But if we aren't trying to cram the game into an hour, there's less reason to rush through it. The difference between 90 minutes and 2 hours is less significant, and we can make the game a little more leisurely. Speedballs tend to have lots of rounds where the last board isn't completed and we have to assign results by the TD and robots. I don't think this is considered a feature, it's just a necessary evil to keep the game moving. Once we break the hour barrier, we don't want to encourage it.

I did have one - T16 Rockies Howell UltraSpeedball IMPs daily at 1600 ET.
1 board/round, 4 minute boards.
But I have reduced it to 15 boards so it fits into 60 minutes:
  • +howell+ +rounds15+ NO UNDOs TCR:60% Clocked.
  • Play fast! www.bit.ly SLASH GlobalClubSked
  • Boards with a contract (3 passes) adjusted double-dummy.
  • +hd+ +asis+

Game calendar: https://www.bit.ly/GlobalClubSked It will show in your local time.

You can have unclocked speedballs, but you need multiple boards/round to run well.
