Sometimes one tires of those stupid robots.Sometimes TD puts in a temp/regular robot when P turns red, then P logs in again.
Sometimes you start a tourney with a robot, THEN your P logs in
So let players sub robot partners with a real human.

Not sure I follow you.
If the player you want to sub in was signed up with you for the tournament then he gets back to his seat automatically, at least in some types of tournaments. And if it's not automatic the TD can still do it on request.
If he wasn't then it's easy to imagine why BBO would not want him to join the tournament for free (or for the lesser price of a robot rental).

I think they're saying that their human partner wasn't available when they registered for the tournament, so they hired a robot partner. Then the human logged in, and they would like the TD to be able to replace the robot with the human.

I've been in that situation just before a free tournament and it always seems to work (even if the tournament is full) that I can deregister with the robot and quickly accept the invite by human.
But yes once the tournament is underway it is probably an issue.

Also, when your P leaves the tourney, you get a temp robot, then your P shows as red at the next board.
Currently, you have to ask the TD, if any, to sub in an online friend.
If you could sub in the red P yourself, then there is no fee issue.

You could tell the TD your friend's name, and they can put them in as your sub. The friend might have to register as a substitute first.
Whether players should be able to put in their own subs should at best be an option given to the tourney host when creating the tourney.

What if there is no TD like most BBO-hosted tourneys?
