I simply bid 2!D if I do not have a 2 suited bid available. I also expect the auction not to die there, though it might. I am intending on bidding spades later

In the very olden days, 2NT overcall shows any 2 suiter. Partner assumes minors. Overcaller would 'correct', pass, or raise.

Fully agreed. With one additional reason, start with diamonds and they bid hearts you can introduce spades at a lower level than when you start with spades and you have to introduce diamonds over a heart bid.

I would bid 2D showing 10+pts and 4D looking for a possible M or D fit.

Unsurprisingly a lot of people advocating bidding diamonds followed by spades. My RHO didn't know what to do and ended up doing nothing:

Partner made nine tricks for 12/14 MPs. One EW pair was in 3♦, the rest were in some number of spades making nine or ten tricks. The only NS pair we didn't beat was the pair who found a double of 4♠ and took it one off.

This illustrates the randomness of club duplicate, at least in my bridge world.

HELLO is a pretty good defense to 1NT. It's a descendant of Cappelletti/Hamilton/Helms/Pottage developed by Jerry Helms and his partners. There's a good booklet on it by Jerry which, last I checked, is available from Baron-Barclay.
