Lost 14 IMPs when other table went down in spades, but pretty sure our opps would have managed to make their vul slam.

why's that? north is obviously bidding to make. does east have reason to doubt north's judgment? considering he's got 9 points for his [sporting but non-absurd] opening bid and 4 cards in his partner's suit, plus plenty more shape, i'd say "no."

He has an Ace in an unbid suit, partner made a 2/1 forcing response.
6S was at best a speculative shot, it is not clear, if N/S go plus,
7Cx is surely a plus score for N/S.
In the end: 6S makes, so ..., but peoble like to sac, against nothing.

In a goulash context I see 6S as a good shot and 7C as an understandable sac if W is a pickup partner.

well, call it speculative if you like, but north obviously has a reasonable expectation of it making. the north hand is roughly what one would expect in terms of shape for such a call. as for east's defensive expectation against such a north hand, i'd say it's limited. if north required a diamond fit he could have taken a slower route. that he didn't, suggests he's got a very short holding or one that's sufficiently long that he can forsee his partner being short, as he has here with 7 of them. from east's viewpoint, if north has very long diamonds, it's more likely south that has the shortage than west, after all where are west's non-clubs? maybe 3 in spades and 2 in hearts, leaves at least 8 cards in clubs and diamonds.

I like the North bid, but North cant be sure, that slam makes,
i.e. cant be sure that he goes plus, he has a nice prob., but
nothing more, basically he needs diamonds 1 looser at best,
i.e. 6 cards are outstanding, p on average will have 2.
East's bid makes North going plus a sure thing.
I love it, when my opponents give me sure money.
