Unless it was a self-splinter (lol) it's just another bizarre preference by Gib

One of GIB's most serious problems, IMO, and it seldom gets the attention it deserves. GIB seems to have a magnet that pulls it to the 2-card preference, especially if the opening bid is a major. Although your example is extreme, I wouldn't call it rare.
I don't even bother to look for a 4-4 major fit any more when a known 5-3 exists.

Another unlucky guess by GIB. 50% chance of spade preference, 50% chance of heart preference. There's also probably a non-zero chance of a cue bid or new suit.

On another day, you would have gotten to hearts.

Why would it be a guess? Is it because GIB is not sure whether the 2H rebid is a cue bid or real suit?

He is just joking :) We are all a bit traumatised by GIB, we sometimes use humour to cope.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

I'm not sure he was joking. GIB does now seem to randomise between some possible responses, at least when it bids in the solitaire Free Weekly Tournament - you can see this by comparing the bidding in multiple plays of the same hand.
