I wish pre-empt related cliches could be inserted elsewhere.

I touch a double and ask LHO: This is a cuebid right?

Seriously, I wouldn't like to step into a bidding missunderstanding so I'd rather check what LHO thinks about this. if he thinks its hearts or has no idea I will bid 5.

We all know that bidding could work, but East is almost certainly bidding to make. Just what are we planning to do with our spade losers? Pull all of their trump and still ruff 3 spades in dummy?

Or hope dummy has J109 in clubs so there can be no over-ruff?

We will be going 800 quite often, and 1100 isn't impossible

Of course, East could be fooling around, with KQJxxxxx and out, but if so he has picked the perfect time and the perfect opp.

I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to pass at the table, and I suspect bidding worked, hence the post, but I vote to pass.

Look at your spades. Can't be a cue, can it? :)

Little reason to assume we can beat 4h or even 6h (except opps
didnt bid that much). Looking at our hand and the bidding 5c is
virtually assured to be a disaster if the opps x the question is
just how big an if is it? risk vs reward is important.

If rho is staring at a spade void and dia AK they are virtually
certain to x and us escaping for less than 500 seems optimistic
at best. If the opps can not find a penalty x though even going down
2/3 or 4(not so much) vul vs their 4h is a fair gain but therein
lies the rub are we sure they can make 4h??? no so since the odds
of 5c being a success (as in making) are slim it seems the right thing
to do this time around is

pass

and mentally thank lho for warning you to the dangers of so many spade losers.

His point was that while it is clear that RHO intended his bid as natural, it is possible that LHO will take it as a cue.

I think that concern is unwarranted. Firstly, when in doubt bids should be natural. Secondly, it isn't possible to construct a hand worth a slam move over 3 where the first available cue is 4. Many experienced players use 4 as keycard over a pre-empt, but still responder can't easily have a hand that warrants a 4 cue as opposed to 4 (if available) or 4 or keycard. Thus I would be very surprised if the opps screwed this up. Of course, the remote chance they have argues for pass.

WTP pass for me. The odds of 5Cx for -500 or worse are higher than those of 5C making.

Ha! Frances seems to have ratted out the companion hand on Bwinners. From that we can guess the opponents' hands. From there it gets really interesting. Everyone is right, everyone is wrong....for reasons not yet foreseen, Mikeh comes out ahead.

And none of the rationales expressed here touch on the serendipity which will ensue.

Pass is right because -450 is better than 6 X -500 after a spade ruff and AKQ underlead?

That would be one case. Also, +50 after Club, two Diamonds and a Diamond ruff would be better than 6 undoubled down one on spade ruff and cash heart. Depends on exact e/w array, but the raise to 6 clubs would happen at my table.
