I can't figure out how to use the box at the bottom of the screen to send messages to the table or my partner.

You have "chat" that talks to the table and left and right arrows to chat to lho or rho only plus a double arrow to chat to both opponents.

Click on your partners username to chat only to them but it is generally disallowed during play. ie. I use the double arrow most often when I have forgotten to alert a bid in time to give them a heads up and my partner is not allowed to see that.
When a deaf person goes to court is it still called a hearing?

ltccolonol uses the new version, so there's no double arrow.

To the left of the chat area, you can click on Table or Opponents to chat to everyone at the table or just the opponents. If you want to send a message to a specific person, you can either type their name into the little area to the left of the input line, or you can click on their name anywhere. The latter will pop up their profile and also put their name into the chat destination field.

P.S. Please notice that the forums are divided into sections for bridge in general, and another section for BBO-specific discussions. I've moved yout thread to the BBO Support Forum, it didn't belong in General Bridge Forum.
