4.

At MP's with certain partners, I might restrain myself to 3.

It seem I didnt make myself clear
There are obviously two choices .. 3 or 4.
I presume its not insignifiant which one you make since the difference between them is rather huge.

3.

I am not going to hang partner for prebalancing, as he is the one short in clubs.

Also, since we are nonvul, there is not nearly as much of a premium on bidding game (assuming that this is IMPs).

3, I don't want to ruin partner if they've made an offshape double based on point count/texture.
I once yelled at my partner for discarding the 'wrong' card when he was subjected to a squeeze that I allowed by giving the wrong count with too high a card. Now he's allowed to pitch aces when the opponents have the king in the dummy. At trick 2. When he could have followed suit. And blame me.

We are vul, the opponents are not, so there is a big premium for game. I think you misread this.

This isn't a 'pre-balance'. Partner is committing this to the 3 level and heard our pass. There is no safety, and partner should not do this with a 4441 15 count. Competing for the partial is crazy at IMPs with a hand of this sort, since he is offering up a number against their 130.

I would expect something like: AQxx AQxx AQxx x. We have a 5th spade, a working JT, and even the J which might be an important card. This is a clear 4 call.

I'd like to know the form of scoring, because at MPs, this is closer.

4 for sure. If partner can't count on us to bid game with this hand, when can he?

I play that a double of 2C shows 4+ spades and is ambiguous about hearts. Using these methods, I would double 2C and be done with it. If partner then doubles 3C I can comfortably bid 3S. I would not double playing standard methods.

Now it is a bit of a guess. If partner has a 3-card spade suit (3352, 3451, etc) then 3S is probably high enough or maybe already too high. If partner has 4 spades then we may well have a very good game.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

I would bid 4 but using standard methods the situation is very unsatisfactory. Both myself and partner have quite a wide range and there is no space to do anything about it.

We haven't promised any values at all and partner Doubles for takeout at 3-level V vs NV. What else do we need to bid 4?

A different black queen?

Both 3 and 4 have merits. If being vulnerable gives partner a better hand for this double than 15 I guess 4 is fine. But if partner is just competing and may have some 15 and occasionally 14 and even 13 then 3 is enough. The club Q looks so wasted and values figure to be with RHO for the overcall, so it is not clear. I think I'd go with 3 unless I'm craving for imp's.

Partner is certainly not just competing. We are vulnerable at imps, there is no point in sacrificing against 3. He noticed our pass and still invites us to be game with a suitable hand. In context, we do have a suitable hand. So 4 it is.

At first glance it looked like a 3 bid, but a FTL evaluation requires only 15 working hcp from pard for game and I think that's expectable. So 4. Of course, if pard comes up with a doubleton club, this is gonna look silly :)

4, we may have some work to do during play but we are likely to make it. And even if it is not makeable, at these colors they may think we are making this and save. 3 is very small target imo.
