A NZ umpire officiating an Australian game?

Since when did they toss the notion of impartial umpires out the window?

When they discovered that everyone wanted the Aussies to lose :)

Bit of a surprise though that the Aussies were the first who wanted to "focus on the Ashes".

After the defeat in the Ashes, Australia are now ranked 4th. Blame it on the Poms and Billy Bowden who also officiated in the last test at The Oval in 2005.

Next time you must insist that no test can be played in Kennington, south of the Thames. And bring back Langer, Hayden, Martyn, Warne, Gilchrist and McGrath. Oh, I nearly forgot that they were in the losing team four years ago

I am dying to hear which excuses NickF has this time round. I was laughed at when I, ten months ago, predicted that England would stand a good chance of regaining the urn.

Meanwhile, I claim that it was very strange that Nathan Hauritz, Australia's front-line spinner, was given five days off. Baffling decision by Ponting, and you have to say he was out-captained in this series.

Did I really laugh at you? Sorry, how humiliating.

I suppose a year ago it was hard to predict:
- our frontline bowlers would all be injured or otherwise crap
- our world class batting line up would crumble time after time after time to a one trick pony English attack
- the myopic performance of our selectors.
- how bad the umpires were at times.
- how ineffectual Ponting has become.

But good luck to England - there's no question the better team won the series and after luxuriating in 14 years of being almost unbeatable it's nice that someone else has a turn at number 1 in the world rankings.

PS And wayne, dont tell me the score from Saturday's rugby. I've erased it from my memory bank already.

England, predictably, are trouncing Bangladesh in the current test match.

Anyone in favour of removing Bangladesh's test playing status? They seem to be good for batting average inflation, and not much else.

No-one appears to have discussed the Ashes yet. All I can say at the mo, is that it's very bad for my health, forcing me to operate on about 4 hours sleep a nigh as I stay up to 3 AM listening to it.

What a knock from Strauss, Cook & Trott in the second innings at the Gabba

[I think this is the right place to hide this. :)]

Yesterday, while commentating on BBO I said that England would bat today (that is on 3 January 2011, in Australia) despite the fact the Australia had won the toss and chose to bat. (It did not occur to me that it might rain.)

At the time, I said this prediction had the same value as my predicions on bridge as a commentator. But some Australians understandably were affronted.

All I can do is apologise here for my slur on the competence of the Australian batsman and say that 4-134 is a fine score. I am sorry for any offence I may have caused.

May the best team win.

Me, and India should have been in even more trouble than they are, Praveen Kumar should have been removed from the attack before taking any wickets, he ran straight down the middle of the pitch in his follow through 10 or 12 times on the first day. Hopefully Swann will extract suitable vengeance.

The game is set beautifully. The 2nd session today is probably the key session of the match. Am also eager to see how Swann versus India middle order plays out.

Yup, fascinatingly poised.

What's the Indian view on what Dhoni said after the test in the West Indies (effectively "We'd have won much earlier with decent umpiring"). There seems to be a reasonable consensus elsewhere that had anybody else said that (after all bar a couple of the decisions including Kumar being removed for running on the pitch were proved to be right) that they'd have been banned, but nobody in the ICC was prepared to take on India as that's where all the money in cricket is.

India are complaining about the umpiring decisions, yet they're the ones boycotting the DRS. Hmmm...

and have one of their strike bowlers trampling the pitch.

still looks like a draw to me, though.
