I've played far too many boards in the last three days (106?) to trust my judgement and it's hard to avoid bias from seeing the hands...
but nige1 (and quite possibly South) would not forgive me if as North I did not bid 5.

If someone bids 5 over 5, it is the hand that knowes about the double fit.
This does not mean, he has to do it, but he is the one and only he.

fully agreed, and having an agreement 5-5 would help too.
