From last BBO Forums Sunday Daylong:

Not rising with the A at trick 2 turned out to be fatal for the defence.

Had GiB(W) chosen to part with the J instead of a spade on the fourth diamond, this could have been the position before the last diamond is played:

So that's how I get to be an advanced player, Open 1NT with 12 HCP and 6 losers.
All this time I thought my card play, bidding and hand analysis were the problem.

What I don't understand is why you didn't just open 4NT?Posted Image

Nice! Non-material squeezes are interesting. Once you start seeing them, they begin to pop up everywhere.

I am interested in why (despite the small psych quality of the 1NT) the choice of opening lead was a small doubleton and not a spade. Small spade cant go that wrong can it. Even the ace

I'm not seeing the squeeze here, I'm seeing South has seven tricks on the diamond lead and two more when West ducks twice. On the second round of hearts, is is not clear to put the ace up and try a spade, if that fails it was always making. I also don't see any problem with South's weak NT opening.

The point is that by the time of the second duck, he could no longer retain enough spades to defeat the contract, he has to win the first heart. It's a squeeze because if he didn't solely control the clubs, he could keep his spades.

The only problem with south's weak no trump was that he wasn't playing one.

Sorry yes, I see what you mean now. West cannot guard the clubs and keep spade length to put East in with a spade and be able to take four spade tricks when East returns an honor. Hence West has to fly up with the heart ace on the first round of the suit before leading a spade to avoid coming under pressure later. Is there any way of being able to work that out at trick two?
