1C = clubs/11-13 bal/17-19 bal, could have four diamonds but not five
1D = negative (not enough for game opposite 17 bal) or diamonds
How would you continue after this start? I guess more hands could go into the 1D negative at a push...

At what level do you hope your continuations will be? 3? 4?

Polish clubbers rebid 1 Major on any 4, or 3 if not 4, holding a balanced min. The 1N rebid shows the bigger hand. I'd do that.

I'd overcall 3♦.
Or is that not what you were asking?
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

I've played the 1D response = neg or ♦ (we only really pass the 1♣ with 0-5 and 4+♣). It works well enough. (But don't ask about sophisticated sequences, this partner doesn't like to get into too much detail!)
