One of dummy's clubs in with the spades Law 41D?

North led the Ace of diamonds, cashed the King, then switched to clubs. South won the Queen and switched to trumps, declarer subsequently taking discards on dummy's spades to make 10 tricks: EW +420.

Dummy's 3 of clubs was mixed in with the spades, so the "spades" showing on dummy were KQJT3. Based on this, South believed the second club wouldn't cash (as dummy had played the singleton jack).

The environment was a low-skill club game.

What do you rule?

Law 41D tells us how dummy displays his hand. Dummy has failed to display his hand according to that law and that failure has damaged the opponents. There is no penalty for failing to display dummy correctly so we can adjust under Law 12A1 to the result if dummy had been properly displayed.

And declarer can't try to get around this with the rule "everyone is responsible for dummy". I don't know offhand if something like this existed under earlier Laws, but it's not in the current Laws.

Declarer can try to get around it, but if the TD is competent he will not succeed. B-)

I have been told by a TD in the ACBL Tournaments dept that "everyone is responsible for dummy" last appeared in the Laws in 1942, and the removal of "in the same breath" is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2013.

A quite interesting statement.

I have never anywhere in the laws noticed any explicit statement to such effect.

The only similar rule seems to be the one stating that there is never any penalty for a revoke by dummy. This rule has existed essentially unchanged since (before) 1932!

We of course have the Law that requires each player to ascertain that he has exactly thirteen cards both before looking at his hand and also before returning his cards to the board.

This Law places no obligation on any other player to verify that dummy (when originally faced) has exactly thirteen cards, the only Law that can be taken to such effect is the one requiring each and all players to pay sufficient attention to the game.

Have you checked the old Rubber Bridge laws? Maybe that's where it was.
