You can't convert for penalty with such weak clubs and a weak defensive hand.

The only real question whether there is ever a time not to bid the Qxx suit.

I can see an argument that it might be better to show xxx in Diamonds rather than Qxx in a major.
It's probably best to have partner declarer and there's less chance you're going to play a diamond contract...

Even so, I expect that showing the Qxx suit is probably best

Well, that is what happened...bid the Qxx suit (Spades). Partner had 5 Diamonds AKQxx,5 Hearts, K,J,10,xx and 3 Spades A,J,x...... Partner jumped to 3 Spades , thinking a 4 card suit was being bid.....not a good result.

I guess Partner should bid 2H ? (It turns out we would have 7 card fit)......Partner felt the hand was too good to just bid 2H after the Qxx suit was bid

Common agreements are

• Notrump bids = Strong (18+) and natural.
• Cue-bid = Artificial force (may be interested in a stop for notrump).
• Jump cue = Splinter.
• Raises = Constructive.
• New suit = Natural, flexible, and strongly invitational.
• Jump-shifts = Forcing with a good suit.

Variations are possible. For example I like

• Cue-bid = Unassuming (either 4 card constructive raise or interested in notrump)
• Jump cue = Exclusion key-card.
• Raises = Pre-emptive.
• Jump-shift = Fit jump (good suit + support -- useful in cases like this).

Or, 2♣ and pass partner's rebid. Partner should be declarer (He/she plays the hand better than you - saving your marriage ). (Hope partner does not take it as Michaels when he/she has doubled.)
If LHO bids another suit and you hear another double, pass.

LHO and P have the cards. P is well placed.

i agree with a diamond - give partner enough space to show a fat hand so we can bail at a low level. bidding a major risks partner punting 4M.
