This problem was sent to us by a friend.
My partner choose 4♠, that friend 4NT (minors) and I 5♥ (hoping it is a slam try for any suit).
I didn't like DBL with a void at this level when partner will often pass and we play 4♥X when we have slam.

I don't like double because: (1) there's a decent chance that partner passes and I can't believe defending is best here, (2) I think I prefer to play 4S to 5m even if partner only has 2 trump.
My bid admittedly makes it much harder to get to slam, but I guess I'm surrendering to the "pre-empts work" philosophy here and taking what is close to a sure thing.
If 4S is even too much because RHO was bidding to make and has a good spade holding, I have an escape route via 4N if RHO doubles.

Besides, double is a transfer of responsibility so I win the post-mortem.

4NT seems horrible, why show the minors when you have a good 5 card spade suit?
I think DBL but could understand 4♠

Well, I don't like 4S as it is too commital, and 4NT for the minors is idiotic. What is left is double.

I don't particularly like defending when holding a void in their suit and have a solid suit of my own - too often I need to lead a trump and can't.
Partner knows I have a big hand for this bid.

level in 3 suits and slam is hardly out of the picture. 4s just seems to take
all of the offensive wind out of our sails.
x
fits this hand almost perfectly surely we would have no trouble with x with
1 less spade and 1 more of either minor. There would be no concerns
about p passing our x and us defending with a void. Does the 5th spade
really change the scope of this hand so much??
Preempts work but they work much better when we make purely arbitrary
decisions on hands where several options are available.

Tough hand. I can see 4S easily being the winner.

For sure, this is the main upside of doubling imo, you get to 6 of a minor vul. The downside is maybe too many 300s vs your vul 4S but it's also possible 4S is down when partner passes (getting tapped is not gonna be great if you don't have a fit).
I have already changed my mind to X but it might change back heh.
Honestly if partner bid 5m I would bid 5H, we could easily have a grand opposite A sixth and an ace for instance, and that seems like the only hand partner would bid grand with given that we have AKQ of spades and both minor kings.

How bad is it then to bid directly 5H? Can you rate DBL, 4S and 5H and 4NT?
