I'd bid 5, but pass could be better, sad that I saw the other hand first because this one is tougher.

Partner's a passed hand I'm taking my plus on defense and leading a trump. If he has 5 diamonds or something I consider it unlucky and hope they still go down.

At the table: So this is the obvious partner of hand1. The winning action would have been 4 (+620 for making) followed by pass (+500 for down 2); 5 was a losing action as it ends up down 1 doubled. Obviously on different hands it might be a different ordering. I think I prefer pass, but it looks like the poll is split around 50/50 on pass or bid, with the majority of the bidders picking 5.

I had some really good mentors when I started and one of them said there is no such thing (almost) as a bad plus score at imps. If you lose a couple - 5 that's just the cost of doing business.

Wow, I hope they tempered that a little. After all, if partner opens 1 I can probably get a plus with AKxxxxx/AK/AK/AK by passing; but I am pretty sure this would not be a good plus!
