We play strong NT and don't open balanced 11s in 1st or 2nd seat. Given that, what would you open, if at all?

In my regular partnership we don't open as agressively as others in 1st or 2nd either.

I'm bidding 1♣, folding my cards and putting them in my pocket.

this hand I would pass but it is very close for me

QJx Axxx KJT xxx and I would not have a problem opening

Playing Str NT, it's madness to me to not open opening hands like this in 3rd seat. Way too many things can go right, and very few can go wrong, so long as you have the agreement to open hands like this. My style (playing str NT) is to open any ACBL legal hands in 3rd (with very light marked on our card, prominently), as well as 4cM's in 3rd. I'm not selling anything, nor on commission, but don't underestimate the preemptive effect of even a 1♣ opening. What to open depends on your style and your partnership's style -- 1♥, 1♦, and 1♣ are all plausible (my preference is a baby NT, but I realize that's off the table). A 4/3/3/3 8-9 count with no good lead to ask for makes sense to pass, but if pard is systemically passing his 10's and 11's, in my opinion you have to get in with these hands. Put another way, the lighter pard will open in front of you, the less you have to protect, while the heavier partner needs to be to open, the more you have to protect with near openers.

I pass. Too quacky and 2 winners short of an opener (9 losers), not to mention only 1 1/2 QTs. I don't open these playing Precision either.
