Does anyone have a recommendation for a simple web hosting service?
I guess my only requirement is ftp-access (i.e. I want to upload my own html/css code, and not be forced to use some online web page editor), plus a bit of space, and preferably speedy (a 50MB picture shouldn't take ages to load).

(A link to an unbiased review of web hosting services---most of them seem to be fake advertising---would also be welcome.)

We use fatcow. It may be more than you need right now (we don't use all of it). OTOH, you may grow into needing more, and if so, it'll be there. I don't remember where you are, but note the "country" menu in the upper right, below the "customer login" link. You can choose US, Canada, or UK. They're having a sale right now.

Never had a problem with the site not being available or anything like that.

Don't know any unbiased general reviews, sorry.

I don't have any experience with web hosting.

In the web tech savvy part of my family, one person uses dreamhost and the other uses fatcow for small-scale web apps. They have no complaints.

According to Matthew MacDonald, author of Creating a Website: The Missing Manual, Third Edition, the web is pretty useless for researching web hosting companies online. He lists these firms as decent options so they probably don't totally suck:

Brinkster www.brinkster.com
DreamHost www.dreamhost.com
GoDaddy www.godaddy.com
HostGo www.hostgo.com
Insider Hosting www.insiderhosting.com
OCS Solutions www.ocssolutions.com
Pair Networks www.pair.com
Sonic.net www.sonic.net

Frankly, I wouldn't trust that list at all. At the very least, DreamHost and GoDaddy are infact known to grossly oversell capacity, and, more or less, totally suck.

Do you need it to be free or are you okay with paying a few dollars per month?

Hi
After a lot of research before deciding for one, I chose 9cubehosting.com not only for the cost but also their customer service is good to comparing with others…..
