OK, I give up.

I'm playing low. If they play a club back, I'll insert the 9. The only reason to play a different club is to dissuade them from playing a club back, and I don't mind a club back.

Yes, yes, I know, hearts are going to be split 4-0 with West, so it's going to be a club ruff by West and overruff by North, heart to the ace, discovering the split, another heart, now East shows up miraculously with the spade ace (the spade ace, a heart void, and he didn't bid spades) and a club ruff for down 1.

However, I don't think playing a higher club makes a difference. If hearts are 3-1 or the spade ace is where it's supposed to be, and and I sluff a useful club, I'm going to end up with a worthless club at the end of the hand, that I'll have to try a diamond finesse to get rid of it.
